Which is more expensive, cashmere or pashmina?

Pashmina is more expensive than a cashmere shawl due to its finer quality. Pashmina is the specialized grade of cashmere. Cashmere and pashmina are not different fibers, but pashmina comes with a lower micron, better fineness. It is higher quality than regular cashmere.

Why are shahtoosh shawls banned?

Shahtoosh shawls are banned to protect the endangered chiru species. Shahtoosh has been one of the signature traditional luxury shawls for hundreds of years in the Kashmir region. But due to overhunting those majestic animals, the population started to drop quickly. 

It costs 3-5 chiru lives to make just one shahtoosh shawl. Chiru hunting and trade were banned worldwide under CITES Appendix I to protect the chiru population and ecological balance of the region. Today, it is not possible to buy a new shahtoosh.
