We have been working with Dhaka muslin and luxury fabrics for half a decade. When we met the founder of cervelt textile Richard Keddell, come up with an impossible idea. What if we could weave the finest cervelt yarn with the thousand-year-old dhaka muslin weaving technique. Dhaka Muslin is practically the finest fabric in the world.

We weave the most luxurious scarf with the finest cervelt yarn using the ancient dhakai muslin technique. It turned out to be a marvelous fabric that also can pass through a ring. 

It reached the delicateness and beauty that only shahtoosh could possess. It is not only an extraordinary masterpiece but also impacts the black market for shahtoosh.

Those who are not familiar with shahtoosh, it is the world’s finest fibers even better than Vicuna. It was famous for extraordinary fineness and distinct features. A handwoven shahtoosh shawl (2×1 meter) could pass through a ring.Along with Dhaka muslin, you will not find another historical fabric that can pass through a ring. 

Since 1979, shahtoosh has been banned because it was driving the endangered Himalayan chiru toward extinction. Still poachers hunt Chiru for the black market. We already weave dhaka muslin, historically more pricey than shahtoosh. Muslin is great for summer. Now we planned what if we make an ethical shahtoosh alternative for winter. With the inspiration & support from Richard finally we made one of the most unique cervelt scarf.

What is Cervelt Wool?

Cervelt is an ultra luxury natural fiber. The fiber sourced from the red deer of New Zealand. It is finer than baby cashmere, and has a curly & creamy experience. The fiber is small & elastic. Collected from the down fiber of red deer. Only 20 gm of fiber you can collect from a deer. It is like mining the gold according to Richard. The production is strictly limited. 

Douglas Creek, a New Zealand business, spent eight years first separate & spun the fiber. They trademark it as cervelt. The name cervelt came combining two words – one Italian & another English. Cerv is taken from Italian word Cervo means deer & elt taken from the English word Velvet. Conceptually the name meaning is deer velvet. It shows the incredible fabrics softness, elasticity & divine beauty. We confirm it according to Richard Keddell, the owner of Cervelt.

We can weave the unique shawl with  40 Nm superfine yarn without any treatment because of its elasticity & our artisan’s magical hand. 

Summary 

How fine is cervelt, really?

Cervelt measures about 13 microns. It’s comparable to other fine fibers like baby cashmere and vicuna, but its distinction lies in its consistency. Most animal fibers are not very consistent, but cervelt maintains almost the same diameter along its length. This makes the fabric feel gentler against the skin. 

High-quality vicuna fiber is around 12 microns, and shahtoosh can be around 10 to 11.5 microns. Our own Dhaka muslin vegan fiber is under 10 microns. Fineness is often one of the most important metrics for luxury fabrics.

Any fiber under 13 microns is considered among the top luxury fibers. Although cervelt is in ultra luxury top grade luxury textile, its appeal comes from other features as well. What lifts cervelt above the rest is its natural wavy curl. It gives the fabric nice elasticity and a springy nature. This reduces tension on the fibers. Along with its beauty and natural strength, the fabric can last for decades with proper care.

Why cervelt is the warm legal answer to shahtoosh?

Shahtoosh was the most luxurious wool ever made, and it’s also the most tragic. The whole process of making shahtoosh involved killing the Tibetan antelope,chiru. A rich fabric culture developed around shahtoosh over centuries.

For a long time, shahtoosh fiber was extremely difficult to harvest, but that changed with the invention of modern guns. Chiru were hunted in large numbers for their valuable wool, pushing the species to the brink of extinction.

However, in 1979, shahtoosh was banned worldwide to protect the endangered species. Since then, it has become even rarer and is now mostly found in museums and private collections. A shawl that could pass through a ring mesmerized luxury fabric enthusiasts.

The ban did help the chiru population recover over time. But people did not stop owning shahtoosh. There was no other fabric so fine that it could pass through a ring. Its extraordinary warmth and durability could not be matched by any modern fabric. Chiru are still hunted illegally for their wool.

What makes our cervelt different? We weave it

Every cervelt product you can find on the market is knitted. There are knitted sweaters, socks, stoles, and other winterwear. It’s the traditional approach for animal fibers. A few machine woven cervelt products you might see.

But we successfully woven cervelt scarves that can pass through a ring. We asked Richard to deliver the finest yarn for the project. We use the finest cervelt 40 Nm yarn on a traditional Bangladeshi loom. Use the same technique behind Dhaka muslin. 

For the context, weaving Dhaka muslin focuses on making ultra-fine fabric that often takes 5–6 months to produce just one saree. Weaving cervelt with the same technique comes with numerous difficulties. The process is extremely slow, delicate, and often fails.Our artisans take time to master it.

Is cervelt ethical?

Cervelt is completely ethical. The clean line between cervelt and shahtoosh is that cervelt does not harm any animal. It is combed and collected from the red deer as a by-product of an established leather industry. 

On the other hand, shahtoosh requires slaughtering the Himalayan chiru. Before, shahtoosh was the only fine luxury shawl that could pass through a ring. After we developed the cervelt shawl, there is no valid reason to buy an illegal shahtoosh shawl for its delicate warmth. It can save many chiru lives that are still lost for the illegal black market shahtoosh trade.

Characteristics of Cervelt wool Fabric 

Cervelt fabric is breathable. It feels comfortable both in winter and summer. The wool is also  skin-friendly. Regular wool creates issues for some people, but cervelt does not cause any allergies or irritation

This fabric also has a natural ability to absorb water fast. The textile absorbs sweat and moisture from the body & dries it away. This characteristic makes it comfortable in warmer climates, too. 

Appearance

The fabric comes with a simplistic appeal. It has a natural  warm greige-fawn, close to Pantone Warm Taupe 16-1318 TCX. We can dye it any color. But people prefer its natural, rich, unique color. After washing the color changes lighter to yellowish. 

Softness

Cervelt is quite soft. But its softness is different from cashmere or vicuna softness. It is creamy and soft, no word to express the softness. It changes the definition of comfort.

Yarn quality

The red deer down fiber  is used to make cervelat yarn. It is one of the best quality yarn, which is mainly knitted to make garments.

Breathability

This fabric is more breathable than other wool. Its tiny curl allows more air to pass.

Heat absorption
