26 Modern Luxury Fabrics: A Complete Guide in

by | Aug 20, 2024

As the days go by, the craze for luxurious fabrics and fashion is growing rapidly. There are tons of fabrics that represent the word, luxury. Those luxury fabrics are not only expensive but also offer some unique features.

We, Team Muslin Dhaka, have been working on luxury fabrics & fashion for years. Recently, we’ve also created individual articles on each luxury fabric. We’ve researched till now.

Today, we will give a collective discussion on luxury fabrics of the 21st century.

The article won’t end soon. So, let’s move on.

What is Luxury Fabric?

A fabric made of the finest natural fibers, having some unique craftsmanship and qualities, is known as a luxury fabric. Luxury fabrics aren’t available for all. The process of making any specific luxury fabric is always special. In our thoughts, luxurious fabrics aren’t just pieces of fabric, they are a form of art with a compelling story, carrying a legacy.

Why Do They Become Luxury Fabrics?

A fabric should have these qualities to become a luxury.

Natural Material

9 out of 10 times, luxury fabrics are made of natural fibers i.e cotton, silk, wool, animal fur leather, etc. Although other premium fabrics also contain organic fibers, luxe textiles are a bit different. For example, mulberry silk. The yarns of this fabric are only derived from the Bombyx mori moth that lives on mulberry leaves. No other yarns can make mulberry silk.

Unique Craftsmanship

Artisans follow some unique patterns while weaving a luxury fabric. Those special techniques give the fabric some exotic outlook and texture. Chiffon can be a good example here. The special treatment during production makes the fabric crinkled.

Exclusivity

Creating excellence takes time and effort along with quality resources. That’s why luxury items aren’t available on a large scale. The first and foremost rule of being a luxurious fabric is to be unique and rare. If the item is available and accessible to all, then no matter how expensive it is, it won’t be considered as luxurious.

Outstanding Features

Design, outlook, and high price aren’t the only things good about luxe fabrics. Some of them are very soft, comfortable, and good for the skin; like Dhakai Muslin fabric. Few are even durable enough to withstand rough uses for years, like Japanese denim. The features and benefits should be worth the money.

Fantastic Look

The outlook of exclusive fabrics always remains different. The standout design and texture will easily reveal the identity as a luxury product. Let’s say you can easily figure out a piece of mulberry silk among several other fabrics because of lustrous pure white color.

Obviously Expensive

Here’s a thing you need to understand. Luxury fabrics are expensive. But not all expensive fabrics are forms of luxury. Production of historical fabrics like muslin, silk, lace, damask, etc. requires a big amount of effort, time, and expanse. It’s impossible to produce them cost-effectively.

Luxury Fabrics Vs Designer Fabrics

A big difference between luxury fabric and designer fabric is luxury fabric carries some art and symbols that can relate with a culture or historic period. But a designer fabric is the result of a fashion artisan’s creative mindset.

To be more specific, luxury fabrics come with their own stories. Dhaka muslin is still alive with the story of the rise of the subcontinental textile industry over European luxury hubs.

But if Emanuel Ungaro creates a new type of fabric from the existing options, it can be an exclusive designer fabric, not a luxurious fabric.

Both luxury and designer fabrics are somewhat forms of art and uniqueness. There’s always a chance that a modern designer fabric can become a luxury fabric in future when it gets recognized as a symbol of wealth and class globally.

For example, Georgette fabric. Famous designer Madam Georgette de la Plante created this fabric as a thicker and denser version of traditional chiffon. But a few decades later georgette also earned its name as a luxurious item.

So, despite being very similar, designer fabrics aren’t always luxury fabrics in terms of richness and depth of artistic value.

Importance of Luxurious Fabrics in the Fashion Industry

The concept of luxury fabrics is deeply rooted with fashion. Most luxury fabrics were created depending on the needs of fashion enthusiasts.

A simple gown or evening dress made of poly or polycotton might sound just fine. But when the same gown is made of rich fabrics like taffeta, tussah, etc., it gives the wearer an elegant look with optimal comfort.

Exclusive Fabrics Bring Elegance to Fashion

Luxury fabrics aren’t only to show off that you have the money to buy rich stuff. Instead, they show how much you value quality and sustainability.

Exclusive fabrics help to create brand value. Thus, high-end dresses and shirts are made of luxury clothing fabrics.

The Quality & Comfort of Luxury Fabrics are Unparallel

Rich clothing fabrics like pure silk and lace have a beautiful finish. Synthetic or semi-synthetic fabrics can’t imitate it. That’s why they are so unique.

Exclusive fabrics also come in handy when making designer dresses.

Besides, luxurious clothing fabrics are durable if maintained properly. Investing money in luxe fabrics & fashion is justified because of this.

Health Benefits Assured

There are medical statements on different luxury fabrics being good for the skin. Natural fibers attract less dust and allergen. These hypoallergenic fabrics are good for sensitive skin too.

But the most important benefit of these fabrics is sustainability. Producing brocade or damask fabric might take a lot of time and money. But the production process emits less waste. Luxury fabrics are mostly biodegradable.

Apart from logical explanations, these luxe fabrics attire makes us feel very special!

Why Few Fabrics Aren’t in this List

You might wonder if this list contains every exclusive fabric in this world. No, there are more than hundreds of expensive and on-demand fabrics across the world.

Our main goal was to name only those fabrics which match with the criteria of being luxury and legally found in most of the counties. That’s why many names like shatoosh, Lotus silk, Golden spider silk, Leopard fur, etc., aren’t mentioned here.

But to fill your mind, we covered them in another article, Most Expensive Fabrics. You will find the rarest, exceptional, and even lost fabrics over there.

You might also find some names common in both articles. Because they are both luxurious and expensive at the same time. This means all luxury fabrics can be somewhat expensive. But not every expensive fabric can become a luxury.

Uses of luxury Fabrics

Being able to collect a renowned luxury fabric isn’t the end of your job. You need to know the key uses of those exclusive fabrics. A fabric for making the best tops won’t make a good sofa cover, right?

So, let’s discuss the main uses of some common luxury fabrics.

Luxury Fabrics for Clothing

By clothing, if you mean different types of tops, shirts, pajama etc., then you should pick something soft, breathable, and lightweight (unless for the cold season). Muslin, pima cotton, georgette, tussah, denim, faille, etc. are the options here.

For skirts, maxis, and gowns, you can pick mulberry silk, lace, organza, velvet, etc. Dhakai muslin and Japanese denim are versatile fabrics for any type of use.

But you need to purchase fibers that can insulate heat for winter. Vicuna, alpaca, leather, and other woolen fabrics are good for making sweaters and jackets. Brocade, Damask, and similar designed fabrics can make exotic party wear during cold weather.

Other sheer fabrics, such as chiffon, crepe, organza, lace, etc., are top priorities in making bold dresses. You can also find them used as decorative layers over a dress or skirt.

Luxury Fabrics for Upholstery

The first priority to pick upholstery fabrics is elegance. As you are planning to purchase luxury fabrics for upholstery, you need to focus on both design and longevity.

Brocade and Damask are two fabrics that fill the criteria easily. But the use of selvedge denim in making upholstery items like sofa covers or spreads is also a good idea.

Evergreen leather and suede fabrics are always easy picks. They don’t require regular maintenance. Just make sure no sharp object gets in touch with the leather covers.

Luxury Fabrics for Curtains

Curtains and window treatment fabrics come with proper drapery. The requirements to make curtains aren’t always the same.

If you want air and sunlight to pass through your windows or doors, you need something very lightweight, breathable, and semi-sheer. Like chiffon, crepe, mulberry silk, Pima cotton, etc.

Brocade, damask, rich chenille, taffeta, etc. will ensure your proper privacy. You can use these fabrics to make curtains that would properly cover your windows without any sneak peek.

Luxury fabrics for Bedding

Mulberry silk and Muslin fabric are the two best fabrics to make bedding items.

Mulberry silk keeps your skin moisture intact. They can also help you in preventing hair fall. Mulberry yarns don’t attract dust or allergens.

Whereas muslin fabric is very comfortable. No other cotton fabric is finely woven like muslin. The heat regulation properties of muslin fabric are so good that many bedding companies only sell muslin comforters, duvet covers, quilts, etc.

Apart from those two, there are some other fibers like Pima cotton, denim, etc. good for making safe and durable bedding essentials.

Luxury Fabrics for Home Decor

Luxury fabrics that have great designs and textures that one might notice from a distance should be used to make decorative items. Among the fabrics, the most common names are organza, charmeuse, velvet, moire, and damask.

You can use both light and heavily-woven fabrics for remodeling your interior. It depends on what type of outlook you are expecting. Damask, brocade, charmeuse, etc. can have dense designs or prints. These fabrics are perfect for royal interior looks.

But for subtle home decor, white lace, velvet, moire, organza, taffeta, etc. would be more preferable. Sometimes, denim and muslin can also perform better than these home decor textiles.

Luxury Fabric for Undergarments & lingerie

Lace, chiffon, mulberry silk, and muslin fabrics make appealing lingerie. They are very gentle to sensitive skin and bikini areas.

These fabrics have an optimal level of breathability that would keep you dry and comfortable for hours. Among all the lingerie fabrics, luxury lace fabric is the most appealing option. This fabric comes in handy in personal times.

How to Care for Luxury Fabrics?

After hitting the jackpot by getting the real luxurious fabric, you must know ways to clean and store the expensive item. So, before drawing the end, let’s talk about the things to follow for luxury fabric maintenance.

Washing

Luxury fabrics are mostly pure cotton, pure silk, genuine leather, and animal fur/wool.

If your exclusive fabric is made of cotton fibers, you need to:

  • Read the care label first no matter what the material is
  • Lukewarm water should be used
  • Use detergent milder than regular ones
  • Better not to wash other colorful clothes with the luxurious one
  • Don’t rinse, twist, or rub the fabric too hard
  • Use your hands, not any brush
  • Machine wash isn’t always preferred

For silk fabrics, the instructions are as follows:

  • Don’t keep the fabric in water for too long.
  • Like before, use lukewarm water only
  • Baby detergent would be great for silk fabrics; you can also purchase dedicated soap for silk
  • Don’t twist the fabric
  • Wash silk fabrics separately
  • Avoid machine wash

The right way to clean woolen fabrics is:

  • Better if you dry-clean
  • Only use cold water
  • If you want to use the washing machine, put it in low rev; use a mesh bag too
  • Don’t even think of using fabric detergent. You can find shampoo-detergent for wool. Buy one for your merino or alpaca sweater
  • Avoid rubbing, twisting, and squeezing

And for leather fabrics:

  • The water needs to be slightly warm; you only need to mix the water with the cleaning solution
  • You can use homemade vinegar solution or buy Honey Conditioner
  • Use a decent brush to rub the solvent over the leather surface

Drying

  • Don’t tumble dry any exclusive fabric
  • Only air dry
  • Use non-metal hangers instead of clips to hang the fabrics
  • Don’t let the cloth dry under direct sunlight; instead, dry it under a shade

Ironing

  • Know first whether your fabric requires ironing or not
  • Put another cloth over the fabric and then iron

Stain removal

You need to be careful wearing or using a luxury fabric. In case you stained your clothes, you need to act immediately.

Wash the stained area with cold water. Otherwise, the marks would stick on the surface for good.

It’s not the best idea to purchase any stain remover and start fixing the mess at home. You better reach a nearby cleaner store and seek their help to remove the stain.

Storing

  • You need to store your luxurious clothes in a cupboard where moisture won’t get any access
  • It’s better to use hangers because some sensitive fabrics can get fold marks and look bad
  • If possible, cover the outside of the clothes with plain paper or plastic.
  • Clothes or items that you rarely use should be kept in open air every once in a while
  • Never forget to use naptholene mothballs in your cupboard or drawer

How Sustainable and Ethical are Luxury Fabrics?

You can barely find a luxury fabric made of synthetic fibers. All the fabrics we talked about are made of natural materials.

Natural fibers like wool, cotton, and silk are biodegradable. They degrade and keep the soil pure. You can also see the production of these fabrics emitting fewer pollutants and wastes.

However, you can’t stop some machines consuming a huge amount of energy during production. When the energies burn, they might emit a noticeable amount of carbon.

Apart from that, fabrics made of natural fibers are totally environment-friendly. Luxury fabrics sold by global brands have certificates like GOTS, Oeko Tex, STeP, EU Ecolabel, etc. on their products. These labels prove their sustainability.

The matter of ethics is often ignored while buying luxury or expensive fabrics. Although animal cruelty isn’t directly involved with producing fabrics like vicuna, alpaca, or mulberry. There are chances that rapid production pressure might endanger animal lives.

So, several local and international authorities put restrictions on hunting animals or harvesting wools to preserve the livestock. That’s why despite being in demand, no commercial group can pressurize a species for business benefits. Even the concept of peace silk is getting popular to cause less harm to moths and silkworms.

How Do You Buy Luxury Fabric Ethically?

If you target buying cruelty-free luxury fabrics, you should avoid leather and suede fabrics.

As for other fabrics sourced from animal fur, you need to make sure the products are marked cruelty-free. Buying from global sellers and brands is the best solution here. Famous brands won’t tarnish their years of reputation by selling unethical products.

When you buy exclusive products, check if the seller has the authority to sell such products. Then recheck the material & certifications.
