The four fiber in Brief
Shahtoosh
Shahtoosh is the most expensive fiber in the world. It was collected from Tibetan antelope (Chiru, Pantholops hodgsonii). They originate from the high mountains of the Tibetan Plateau. The wool is harvested by killing the animal and collecting the underwool.
In 1979, shahtoosh was banned worldwide under CITES Appendix I to protect the endangered chiru species. Today, killing chiru, trading its wool, shawl, or yarn is illegal worldwide.
Pashmina
Pashmina is the finest grade of cashmere. It is collected from changthangi goats. It originates from Ladakh, Kashmir, and Nepal. The fine undercoat of the goats is collected in the spring when their coats naturally shed. It is completely legal, and no animals are harmed.
Vicuña
Vicuña is named after its source animal, vicuña. It originates from the high mountain habitats of the Peruvian Andes. The fiber is live-shorn during a traditional Chaccu. After collecting its fiber, the animal is released. It is legal under CITES II with the condition that the fiber must be shorn from the live animal without harming.
Cervelt
Cervelt is collected from the red deer in New Zealand. A company named Douglas Creek developed the processing method. It is collected from the by-product of the established luxury leather industry. It is completely legal, and no quota, permit, or certificate is required.
Comparison micron by micron: how fine each fiber actually is?
An average human hair can be 50 to 100 microns. If we hold that as our baseline, the comparison between luxury animal fibers becomes visible.
Naturally, differences between 1-2 microns are so small, it’s barely noticeable without testing in laboratories. Shahtoosh, pashmina, vicuña, and cervelt are all about 9 to 13 microns on average, so their fiber fineness matters less than you might think.
When we say Vicuña is 13 microns, we are actually indicating the average. Some of the fiber can be as fine as 10 microns while some can be 15 microns, but on average they are 13. Usually, a lower coefficient of variation gives you a better experience. Cervelt may be thicker than shahtoosh, but it has less coefficient of variation and is also consistent across the length.
Some of the readers might be confused between cashmere and pashmina. Pashmina is not separate from cashmere. It is the finest grade of cashmere, combed from the Changthangi goat.
If you are curious about the finest fabric in the world, there is something finer than shahtoosh. Historical dhaka muslin is made with phuti karpas cotton, which comes in at under 10 microns. It could easily pass through the ring test.
Legality: the only difference that cannot be argued
You can argue about the experience between pashmina and vicuña. But their legal status is something we can not argue.

Shahtoosh
It is strictly banned by CITES I. You can not buy, sell, or produce Shahtoosh. Any Shahtoosh product is widely considered immoral, cruel & crime.

Pashmina
Pashmina is collected from Changthangi goats, ideally after the winter. It is completely legal. It has little to no concern about ecology and animal cruelty. Whether it’s moral depends on personal ideologies.
Vicuña
Vicuña has some gray lines. Legally, it is restricted, but you can collect the fiber following the specific guidelines. Harming vicuña is totally illegal. It has moderate concerns about ecology, animal cruelty, and morality.
Cervelt
Cervelt is a new addition to the luxury fiber market. It is completely legal. As a byproduct of the luxury red deer leather industry, cervelt fiber is collected. It is a sustainable fiber. There is no question of legality, as red deer is a common species in New Zealand.
Those deer are known as an invasive species. Red deer also farmed for meat and antlers.
The down is collected from an existing, established luxury leather industry. Cervelt has the same concerns about meat consumption, but not much on the legal or ecological side.

When done right, pashmina is an excellent example of coexistence. It is collected at the end of winter, when the goats naturally shed their hair. It’s often healthy for the goat. Also, those goats are farmed animals.
Vicuña
Collecting fibers from vicuña in the right season does not cause any physical harm to the animal. But some animal rights activists can argue the discomfort they go through when caught is unethical.
Cervelt
Red deer are already widely consumed, like beef and pork, in New Zealand. Their leather goes to the luxury leather industry. But their precious wool is often wasted. Cervelt fibers come from the byproducts of the leather industry. In that sense, it is a sustainable practice.
The ring test: which of these four actually passes
The ring test is a traditional demonstration associated with the Indian subcontinent that showcases the fineness of luxury fabrics. Dhaka Muslin is one of the most famous fabrics that can pass through the ring. The second fabric that could pass through the ring is a hand-woven shahtoosh shawl.
For many years, those two were the only fabrics that passed the ring test. Recently, team Muslin Dhaka development efforts led to the handwoven Cervelt shawl, which also passed through the ring test.
Pashmina and vicuña do not pass through the ring test. Historically, after shahtoosh was banned, the same weavers moved to pashmina weaving. But Pashmina did not pass the ring test like shahtoosh because of its fiber fineness, structure & weaving process.
