Description

A cravat in handwoven Cervelt

Cervelt is the rarest winter down of the New Zealand red deer. One deer gives about 20 grams a year. The fiber measures 13 microns, finer than the finest cashmere. No animal is killed for Cervelt.

Cervelt has been knitted and woven on power looms. We weave it by hand, on the looms that make Dhaka Muslin. This is weaving art, not just another neckpiece.

The cravat is the same Cervelt cloth as our pocket square, woven longer. It weighs about 60 to 66 grams.

Woven on a Dhaka Muslin loom

Our weavers make Dhakai Muslin, GI Registration No. 09, Bangladesh, from hand-spun Phuti Karpas cotton at a yarn count of 500. Working with undyed natural ghost yarn trains a light hand: low warp tension, a soft beat, constant attention to humidity.

Our finest Cervelt yarn needs the same hand. The fiber is short and the yarn breaks easily on a handloom. Weavers who carry muslin thread every day know how to carry it.

The yarn arrives spun at Nm 40 from Douglas Creek in New Zealand. Everything after that is done by hand in Dhaka, using our own Dhaka Muslin technique, a thousand years old.

At the neck

Fold it lengthwise into a band about five inches wide. Loop it once around the neck, cross the ends and tuck them into an open collar. It fills the neckline of a shirt or a fine knit without a tie.

It also wears loose, knotted once at the side like a neckerchief. The cloth is super soft and matte. It resists creasing, so it can be tied and untied all day and still lie smooth.

The cravat is unisex. It is worn by men and women.

The color is the natural fawn of the fiber. Nothing is dyed. It sits well with white and blue shirting and with any natural color.

The edge

The edge is finished by hand, not by machine, so it is slightly uneven.

What is Cervelt?

Cervelt is the winter down of the New Zealand red deer. It measures 13 microns, finer than the finest cashmere. One deer gives about 20 grams a year.

How do I wear a Cervelt cravat?

Fold it lengthwise into a band, loop it once around the neck, cross the ends and tuck them into an open collar. It can also be knotted loosely at the side like a neckerchief.

What is the difference between a cravat and a tie?

A tie is worn under a closed collar. A cravat is worn with an open collar and sits inside the neckline. It is softer and less formal.

Is it for men or women?

Both. The Cervelt cravat is unisex and is worn by men and women.

Is any animal killed to make Cervelt?

No. No animal is killed for Cervelt. The down is a by-product of New Zealand deer farming.
