What is Dhaka Muslin?

What Is Jamdani?

The word jamdani came from Persia. The word jam means flower and dani means vase, full meaning flower vase. The name came after the floral patterns, designs of historical Dhaka Muslin. 

It’s a century-old supplementary-weft weaving technique. Artisans hand-inlay the floral and decorative motif in a fine muslin base, creating a floating pattern on the cloth. Jamdani was previously called figured muslin.

Today jamdani also refers to the decorative saree made with jamdani techniques, which are often very fine, very elegant. The price can easily reach the luxury end. 

Jamdani has been deeply rooted in Bengali culture for wedding and festival dresses for thousands of years. In 2013, UNESCO recognized jamdani as an Intangible Cultural Heritage product.

In the jamdani weaving technique, a supplementary or extra weft is added by hand with a fine bamboo stick. The thread is adjusted with every weft, creating the design bit by bit. How are Jamdani and muslin related?

While Dhaka Muslins popularity took it to a global luxury, jamdani remained a widely celebrated cultural fabric all around India. 

Under Mughal patronage around Dhaka, figured muslins known as jamdani. The fabric flourished, reaching its peak quality under the Mughals. But when the British conquered Bengal and the Mughals fell, those fabrics had to face British colonial trade policy. 

They heavily taxed any textile product that was traded in different parts of the world. The East India Company cultivated regular cotton and indigo in Bengal to mass-produce garments in their country. And those cheaper clothes were again exported without any tariff in the Bengal market. This ruined the local rich textile culture. The demand for handwoven fabrics dropped significantly. 

The condition became hostile for textiles like muslin and jamdani on multiple levels. The patronage was gone, trade was heavily taxed (60-70%), the market was unfavorable. All the trade was strictly monitored under British governance. Even some historical texts claim that the fingers of muslin artists were cut off. ( though there is not any proof yet)

It got immensely hard for jamdani, but a death sentence for muslin. As muslin required a long time, intense labour, and proper funding, it was not viable for the weavers to make muslin. 

As jamdani was affordable, it took less time and effort. Dedicated weavers continued weaving jamdani. It also had local demand for weddings and festivals. 

Jamdani technique survived while Muslin was extinct by the end of the nineteenth century. But its seed remained in the heart of jamdani weavers, in the skills and techniques. That helped the revival of dhakai muslin after almost two centuries.

Jamdani vs Muslin Saree: Which Should You Buy?

If you want to experience ultra-luxury light weight fabric, choose Dhaka muslin. There is no alternative to this divine fashion. If you want ornate, motif-rich elegance, choose Jamdani. 

Authenticity

If you want to buy Dhaka Muslin, you should contact the muslin revival project but they cant sell it as per law. You can buy the most authentic Dhaka muslin from brands like Muslin Dhaka that follow GI 39 rules strictly. They are also supporters of Muslin revival, helping to spread dhaka muslin globally.

The work load, yarn damage is not much in jamdani saree. So jamdani is much less expensive in comparison to muslin. A heritage jamdani costs 1000 to 5000 usd depending on heavy design work.
