So, let’s get started.
What Do You Need for Muslin Quilt Making?
First, you need to collect some accessories and tools to make a muslin quilt on your own. Arrange them accordingly to save time.
These are the things you need to make a DIY quilt:
- Two muslin fabric sheets for the bottom and top layers.
- Batting or wading sheet
- Sewing machine
- Scissor
- Pins and needles
- Double-fold bias tape
How to Make Muslin Quilts? DIY
Step 1: Preparing the fabrics
Start by ironing the muslin fabrics separately. It is to ensure the sheets become plain and don’t make any mess while sewing them.
Step 2: Carefully place the fabrics one by one
Place the muslin fabric on the floor first as the bottom layer. Stretch it properly so that it won’t get wrinkled.
Then, place the patty of the burger, I mean the batting sheet. Stretch it also to avoid wrinkling.
And finally, place the remaining muslin sheet that will be the outer design.
Step 3: Bring the fabrics in a proper shape
Now, use some pins to hold all three layers together. 8-12 small quilting pins would be enough.
When the pins hold the fabrics properly, use a scissor to cut corners and extend parts from the layers.
You can give either square or rectangular shapes to the layers. You can understand the cutting has gone correctly when you won’t see any extra part of the batting or bottom muslin.
Step 4: Start sewing from the middle
At this stage, carefully pick the unstitched quilt and place any top in front of the sewing machine.
Start sewing from the center to make a straight line (width to width or length to length) that divides the quilt into two.
While doing so, make sure all the quilting pins are holding the rest of the area properly and no pin is in the way of the sewing line.
Then, make 2-3 more parallel lines at each side of the first line using the same technique.
Step 5: Again, make sure the borders are accurate
Place your quilt on a plain surface for the second time and see if there’s any extra or uneven area preset. Take your scissors and cut them off the quilt.
Again, use the pins to hold the areas near the borders.
After that, start sewing overlock near the borders following a string line. Don’t forget to remove the pins one by one when the border areas are getting sewed and locked.
Step 6: Attach the borders to finish things off
Finally, wrap up the things by attaching borders. As borders, I prefer you use double fold fabric bias tape.
Take the tape and open up the folds. Place any corner of the tape following the quilt border.
Sew that corner in a way that when you fold back the tape, it goes to the other end of the quilt, and both border corners reach the center of the tape.
After attaching one corner, cut off the area out of the overlock line from the quilt.
Fold the tape as it was before. The other half of the tape would fold to the quilt’s other side. Retake the quilting pins to lock the tapes and start sewing that other side.
That’s it! Your quilt is now ready.
Note: If you want, you can use multiple layers of fabric for making the quilt. Also, it’s better to purchase longer tapes. Otherwise, you have to join tiny tapes to make one long border.
